Classical Gardens of Suzhou

- Branding

Classical Gardens of Suzhou is a rebranding project that reimagines the visual identity of one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites—Suzhou’s historic gardens—for a contemporary global audience. Known for their poetic composition, intricate design, and philosophical depth, these classical gardens are masterpieces of Chinese landscape architecture. This project seeks to honor their timeless elegance while introducing a refreshed visual language that speaks to today’s viewers across both digital and physical platforms.

Rooted in principles of harmony, balance, and layered meaning, the Suzhou gardens are not merely scenic spaces but cultural texts. My design approach began with a deep study of garden aesthetics—rock formations, water reflections, window framing, and calligraphic details. I abstracted these elements into a modern visual system: fluid lines, asymmetric grids, and a muted yet sophisticated color palette inspired by natural materials like stone, bamboo, and ink wash.

The project includes a full suite of deliverables:

  • Poster series that blends classical motifs with bold typography and contemporary layout, aimed at both local cultural institutions and international audiences.
  • A landing page that serves as an interactive digital gateway to the gardens, featuring animations, immersive scroll-based storytelling, and multilingual accessibility. The website not only informs but invites virtual exploration, extending the experience beyond the physical site.
  • Merchandise such as silk scarves, paper fans, notebooks, and enamel pins, each designed to reinterpret traditional garden elements into everyday cultural objects. These items are not just souvenirs—they function as portable ambassadors of Suzhou’s garden culture.

By bridging the past and present, this rebranding project aims to make the Classical Gardens of Suzhou more accessible, especially to younger generations and global visitors. Rather than preserving heritage as something static, the project treats it as a living dialogue between tradition and innovation.

Ultimately, Classical Gardens of Suzhou is a visual and experiential narrative—one that invites audiences to slow down, observe, and reconnect with a philosophy of space that values stillness, subtlety, and poetic presence.
